Learning Aims:

This course is designed to develop the core competencies required by Level 2 Electrical Maintenance Apprentices. It aims to provide learners with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and safe working practices necessary to maintain, repair, and test electrical systems in both domestic and industrial settings. The programme meets the requirements set out by the Maintenance Operations Engineering Technician standard and ensures full alignment with BS 7671, EAWR 1989, and current industry best practice.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the training programme, learners will be able to:

1. Work in line with national health and safety legislation and electrical safety guidelines, including the correct use of isolation and testing procedures.

2. Install, inspect, and maintain typical domestic circuits such as lighting systems, socket outlets, and consumer units.

3. Understand the structure and operation of three-phase induction motors, including their applications in industry.

4. Build and test motor starter circuits including: o Direct-On-Line (DOL) starters Electrical Maintenance 2 o Star-Delta starters with forward and reverse switching o DC injection braking systems for controlled motor shutdown

5. Use basic programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to control simple electrical processes and carry out basic fault diagnosis using input/output testing.

6. Inspect and maintain switchgear and distribution boards, including overload protection, fuses, breakers, and isolators.

7. Perform tests on single-phase and three-phase transformers, including condition checks and performance measurements. 8. Accurately read, understand, and apply information from electrical wiring diagrams and technical schematics.

9. Select and use electrical test instruments correctly to check voltage, resistance, continuity, and insulation.

10. Maintain proper records of maintenance tasks, inspections, and test results in line with workplace documentation standards.

11. Demonstrate strong personal conduct, communication, and teamwork, while taking responsibility for completing tasks safely and to a high standard.
